The trends in fashion tend to go hand in hand with the trends in Interior Design. Just look at any major Fashion and Interior Design publication and you will see the correlation.
As I was watching the Oscars this past Sunday evening, I was reminded of this once again. There was a particular trend this year of modern glamour – elegant neutrals, shimming metallics, textural embroidery and glimmering jewels and beads.
Applying this trend to a dining room can transform it from a bland, ho-hum area into a warm, sophisticated and glamorous place to gather for an elegant meal.
We achieved this look in one such Northern Virginia dining room. Previously this room was dark, cold and lacked life. My clients wanted to have a neutral palette (without being boring) and wanted to bring some sparkle and ambience to the room.
We began our transformation by covering the somber grayish/green walls with velvety matte and antique gold metallic paints on the wainscoting below the chair rail. A faux finish wall covering with pearlescent accents was applied above. We replaced the artwork above the buffet with a round mirror which not only softens the edges of this angular room but also reflects the light from the two pewter buffet lamps.
Two rich mahogany bunching chests were added to display china, crystal and other decorative items as well as to provide additional storage. The chests are backed with beveled mirror which again reflect light into the room. The table was adorned with a gold and black silk table runner, simple cream china atop gold leaf chargers, black satin napkins cinched with pearl and gold napkin rings, and the clients’ crystal stemware and antique silverware.
Sculptural artwork in shades of brown and black with platinum accents, crystal and mercury glass accessories, and black velvet beaded embroidered kidney pillows put the finishing touches on this spectacular room.
