Many new homeowners are faced with having to replace the floors throughout the entire home. Rather than live with the dingy, dated carpet, new homeowners may opt to start fresh in every room. Different flooring options make sense for different rooms. Here are some tips on how to choose which flooring suits the individual needs of each room:

  • Living Room. The most stylish flooring for the living room is hardwood. Depending on the quality, hardwoods can cost anywhere between $3 and $12 per square foot. Engineered wood will save you a little money. Hardwoods are easy to clean and maintain. You can place an area rug in the living room to help reduce the noise. If your living room is heavily trafficked, you may need to refinish it every 8-12 years.
  • Bathroom. When you choose the flooring for your bathroom, the number one factor is water resistance. For this reason, tile flooring is your best choice. Tile flooring can come in a wide variety of colors and styles, so prices vary widely. Choose among marble, ceramic, porcelain, slate, and granite.
  • Bedrooms. When you wake up in the morning, you want to put your feet down on warmth, which is why carpet is a great option for bedrooms. Standard carpets cost between $2 and $5 per square foot. Carpets do require regular maintenance, including weekly vacuuming and yearly steam cleaning if you want to keep it fresh.
  • Foyer. Heavily-trafficked areas of your home, like foyers, need flooring that will stand up to a lot of use. Laminate flooring is a great option for foyers because of its durability. However, for rainy days, make sure you have a mat because laminate should not get wet.
